Deep superconducting magnetic traps for neutral atoms and molecules

چکیده
We describe the design, construction and performance of three realizations of a high-field superconducting magnetic trap for neutral atoms and molecules. Each of these traps utilizes a pair of coaxial coils in the anti-Helmholtz geometry and achieves depths greater than 4 T, allowing it to capture magnetic atoms and molecules cooled in a cryogenic buffer gas. Achieving this depth requires that the repulsive force between the coils ~which can exceed 30 metric tons! be contained. We also describe additional features of the traps, including the elimination of trapped fluxes from the coils and the integration of the coils into a cryogenic vacuum environment suitable for producing cold atoms and molecules. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1633993#

Creating long-lived neutral-atom traps in a cryogenic environment.
We describe techniques for creating long-lived magneto-optical and magnetostatic traps for neutral atoms. These traps exist in a sealed cryogenic environment with a temperature near 4 K, where the background gas pressure can be extremely low. To date we have observed cesium magneto-optical traps with background-limited lifetimes in excess of 1 h, and magnetostatic traps with lifetimes of nearly...

Precision studies of subatomic particles, atoms, and molecules benefit tremendously from electromagnetic traps. These traps confine particles away from material walls, thereby removing the dephasing, sample loss, and systematic backgrounds which result from collisions with these walls. The same confinement also allows for greatly increased measurement times, thereby reducing the measurement’s s...
متن کاملSuperconducting atom chips: advantages and challenges
Superconductors are considered in view of applications to atom chip devices. The main features of magnetic traps based on superconducting wires in the Meissner and mixed states are discussed. The former state may mainly be interesting for improved atom optics, while in the latter, cold atoms may provide a probe of superconductor phenomena. The properties of a magnetic side guide based on a sing...
متن کاملThree designs for a magnetic trap that will simultaneously confine neutral atoms and a non-neutral plasma
Three trap designs are proposed for the simultaneous confinement of neutral atoms and a non-neutral plasma in close proximity. One design uses axially symmetric static magnetic fields with a magnetic minimum in a ring around the trap axis. Axial symmetry is required for confinement of the rotating non-neutral plasma, and the magnetic minimum traps the neutral atoms. The second design uses a rot...
متن کاملQuantum gates with neutral atoms: Controlling collisional interactions in time dependent traps
The creation and manipulation of many–particle entangled states offers new perspectives for the investigation of fundamental questions of quantum mechanics, and is the basis of applications such as quantum information processing. Several proposals to implement quantum logic [1] have been made including ion-traps [2], cavity QED and photons [3], and molecules in the context of NMR [4]. Very rece...
